PRIVATE DESERT TRIP — MARRAKECH & BACK
OVERVIEW
Five days is what it takes to really do the southern desert route justice — and this is the tour that proves it. Our 5 Days Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga is the one we most often recommend to travellers who want to experience the Sahara and the landscapes around it without feeling like they’re just ticking boxes. With five days, there’s time to explore each region properly, discover hidden corners, and spend a full day completely immersed in the extraordinary world of the Merzouga desert.
The route takes you through the High Atlas Mountains, the ancient Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, the ochre gorges of the Dades Valley, the famous Todra Canyon, and the sweeping sands of Erg Chebbi. Along the way, you’ll ride camels at sunset, sleep under a sky overflowing with stars, visit a nomadic family in their desert home, and explore a traditional Moroccan souk. The return route passes through Rissani, the historic Draa Valley, and Ouarzazate — including the lesser-known Telouet Kasbah — before arriving back in Marrakech on the final day.

ITINERARY
DAY 1: MARRAKECH → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → AIT BEN HADDOU → DADES VALLEY
An early departure from Marrakech, heading south. The road climbs steadily through the dramatic switchbacks of the Tizi n’Tichka Pass — at over 2,260 metres, the highest paved mountain pass in North Africa. Traditional Berber settlements line the route, each one a study in resilience and beauty.
The first major stop is the iconic Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary earthen architecture rising above a dry riverbed. Its towers and labyrinthine passages have served as the backdrop for countless films and television productions. From there, you head to Ouarzazate — a lively crossroads city and home to Africa’s largest film studio — before heading east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs.
By evening, you arrive in the Dades Valley, where your hotel sits among canyon walls and dramatic rock formations. Dinner and a well-earned rest round off a full first day.
DAY 2: DADES VALLEY → TODRA GORGE → MERZOUGA
After a leisurely breakfast, the route continues east through palmeries and ksour to the Tinghir Oasis. Just beyond Tinghir, the entrance to the Todra Gorge awaits — a slot canyon of extraordinary scale, where sheer limestone walls rise over 300 metres above a shallow river. The coolness inside the canyon and the echo of water make it one of Morocco’s most memorable natural environments.
From Tinghir, the terrain opens up into the wide pre-Saharan plain as you push toward Merzouga. By late afternoon, the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear — initially just a golden shimmer on the horizon, then growing into the magnificent sand mountains that have captivated travellers for centuries.
Arriving at the foot of the dunes, you mount your camel and ride into the heart of Erg Chebbi as the sun descends in a blaze of amber and gold. Your luxury desert camp awaits with a warm dinner, live Berber music, and a private tent beneath one of the world’s most spectacular night skies.
DAY 3: EXPLORATIVE DAY OF THE DESERT
A full day dedicated entirely to the Merzouga desert. You rise with the sunrise, mint tea in hand, watching the dunes glow in the early light.
Your guide takes you on a 4×4 excursion deep into the desert, venturing off-road to regions that camels and tourists rarely reach. A highlight is the visit to a nomadic Berber family — welcomed into their home with tea and stories, you gain a rare and genuine insight into a way of life shaped entirely by the rhythms of sand and wind.
The afternoon is yours: sandboarding, photography, a solo walk among the dunes, or simply sitting in the extraordinary silence of the Sahara. As the light softens, take another camel ride out to the dunes to watch the sunset from the top.
In the evening, the desert camp comes alive with music, storytelling, and stargazing.
DAY 4: MERZOUGA → RISSANI → AGDEZ → OUARZAZATE
After breakfast, the drive heads westward. The historic market town of Rissani — once the final waypoint on the trans-Saharan caravan route and the ancestral seat of the Alaouite dynasty — is worth a brief stop to soak in its traditional atmosphere.
The road continues through Agdez in the Draa Valley, where ancient ksour rise from among the palm groves, before arriving in Ouarzazate in the late afternoon. Tonight’s hotel gives you a comfortable base for the final push back to Marrakech.
DAY 5: OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH → TELOUET KASBAH → MARRAKECH
Two remarkable heritage experiences close out the journey. First, a return visit to Ait Ben Haddou for those who want to explore it more fully, followed by the Telouet Kasbah — a grand but crumbling 19th-century palace once belonging to the powerful Glaoui chieftains of the Atlas. Its ornate tilework and carved plaster interiors tell the story of southern Morocco’s complex colonial-era history.
From Telouet, the mountain road winds back down through the valley and into Marrakech, where you’re dropped at your accommodation in the early evening.

You may also choose to pay the full amount in advance via card or PayPal, though a standard transaction fee may apply.
We understand that travel plans can change. Generally, if you cancel well in advance (two months or more), you will receive a full refund. Absolutely. Our private tours are fully flexible. We want your trip to be perfect, so if you wish to adjust your itinerary, simply let us know. We kindly request that any significant changes be communicated at least two weeks before your tour begins so we can make the necessary arrangements with hotels and guides.
Yes, Morocco is considered a very safe destination for travelers. The country has a low crime rate, and Moroccan people are globally renowned for their warmth and generous hospitality.
Our tours are designed to be enjoyed by everyone, but certain activities require a basic level of fitness. For example, we advise against camel trekking for pregnant women, individuals who have recently undergone surgery, those with severe back issues, or travelers over the age of 70. We can always arrange comfortable 4×4 transportation to the desert camps as a great alternative!
We recommend packing comfortable, sturdy walking shoes for exploring medinas and ancient ruins. Bring a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and your camera. If your tour includes a desert overnight stay, it is crucial to pack warm layers (like a fleece or jacket), as temperatures drop significantly in the Sahara at night.
Are your tours suitable for families and children? Yes! Morocco is a fantastic family destination. Our guided city tours, desert camps, and activities are highly family-friendly and can be adapted to suit the pace and interests of travelers of all ages.
Can you accommodate special dietary needs? Certainly. Moroccan cuisine is diverse and adaptable. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have specific food allergies, simply inform us at the time of booking, and we will ensure your dietary needs are fully met throughout your journey.
Can we add optional activities to our tour? Yes, adventure awaits! We can easily add optional excursions to your itinerary, such as ATV quad biking, sandboarding down the dunes, or buggy tours in the desert. Just let us know what you are interested in.
Can we do a day trip to the Sahara Desert? Because the true Sahara Desert (like Merzouga or Zagora) is located quite far from major cities—for example, it is over 600 kilometers from Casablanca and involves a long drive over the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech—it cannot be done in a single day. To truly experience the magic of the dunes, we highly recommend a multi-day tour of at least 3 to 4 days.
Every day brought a new adventure. The desert camp had great facilities and the evening entertainment was brilliant.
Very well-paced 5-day tour. You get to see the real Morocco beyond the big cities.
Beautiful tour. The Dades Gorge is gorgeous and the camel ride was a lot of fun.
I loved exploring the Valley of the Roses. The whole 5-day itinerary is packed with stunning sights and wonderful people.
The absolute best part of our vacation. Erg Chebbi is stunning and the camp was very comfortable.
