There’s no shortage of ways to get from Marrakech to Fes — but most of them skip the best parts of the country. This 3-day route doesn’t. Instead of a straight highway drive, it takes you south through the High Atlas Mountains and the UNESCO Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, east along the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, into the Dades Valley for the night, through the extraordinary Todra Canyon the next morning, and all the way out to the Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga. You’ll ride a camel into the sunset, sleep under an endless sky at a luxury desert camp, and then head north through the Ziz Valley and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas to arrive in Fes.
It’s a journey that earns its reputation.
DURATION: 3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS
START: MARRAKECH
END: FES
TOUR STYLE: PRIVATE
– Driving through the scenic High Atlas Mountains and Tizi n’Tichka Pass
– Exploring the historic Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah — a UNESCO World Heritage Site
– Travelling along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs
– Riding camels across the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset
– Watching a glorious desert sunrise over the dunes
– Spending an unforgettable night in a luxury desert camp under the stars
– Passing through the Ziz Valley, lined with date palms and ancient mud-brick villages
– Spotting Barbary macaques in the cedar forests near Azrou in the Middle Atlas
Your driver picks you up in Marrakech in the morning and you head southeast almost immediately. The road climbs through Berber villages and mountain passes toward the Tizi n’Tichka summit — the views across the High Atlas are extraordinary up there, all jagged ridgelines and hidden valleys that feel completely removed from city life.
Your first stop is the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. This ancient fortified village of earthen towers and alleyways was once a key stop on the trans-Saharan trade route and has since been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s one of those places that justifies the detour entirely on its own.
Continuing east, you pass through Ouarzazate — Morocco’s gateway to the desert and home to one of Africa’s largest film studios. From there, the road winds along the base of the Atlas mountains through a succession of kasbahs and oases, leading to your first night in the Dades Valley. The valley’s hotel, framed by extraordinary canyon walls, is a beautiful place to rest.
After breakfast, you head to Tinghir, where a wide, lush oasis offers a refreshing contrast to the arid rock of the day before. From Tinghir, you enter the Todgha Canyon — a narrow gorge with sheer walls rising over 300 metres above a shallow stream. It’s one of Morocco’s most extraordinary natural landscapes and attracts rock climbers from around the world for good reason.
The afternoon carries you through increasingly open desert terrain until the vast orange dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. You arrive in time for the most magical moment of any desert day — sunset from the back of a camel, winding through the dunes as the sky turns to fire.
At your luxury desert camp, dinner is served by lamplight and the evening fills with the rhythms of Berber music under an infinite canopy of stars.
The final day starts with a quiet sunrise over the dunes — a gentle, golden spectacle worth every early alarm. After breakfast at the camp, you head north, leaving the Sahara behind.
The drive follows the Ziz Valley, a long corridor of palm groves and ancient ksour that has connected the Sahara to the north for centuries. As you climb into the Middle Atlas, the landscape transforms completely — cedar forests replace desert sands, and the cool mountain air feels like a different world.
Near Azrou, keep your eyes open for Barbary macaques in the forest alongside the road. The elegant mountain town of Ifrane comes next, before the road descends to Fes, where you’ll be dropped at your hotel or riad in the late afternoon.
IMPORTANT NOTES
– Please let us know about any dietary requirements or food restrictions when booking.
– All vehicles are air-conditioned, modern, and well maintained.
– The itinerary is fully customisable — just reach out if you’d like to make any changes.
To secure your reservation, we require a percentage deposit (payable via PayPal or Credit Card) at the time of booking. The remaining balance can be paid in cash (Euros, US Dollars, or Moroccan Dirhams) to your driver upon pick-up at the start of your tour. You may also choose to pay the full amount in advance via card or PayPal, though a standard transaction fee may apply.
We understand that travel plans can change. Generally, if you cancel well in advance (two months or more), you will receive a full refund. Cancellations made closer to the departure date may be subject to partial refunds or fees, while last-minute cancellations within a week of the tour are typically non-refundable. Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to adjust your dates.
Absolutely. Our private tours are fully flexible. We want your trip to be perfect, so if you wish to adjust your itinerary, simply let us know. We kindly request that any significant changes be communicated at least two weeks before your tour begins so we can make the necessary arrangements with hotels and guides.
Yes, Morocco is considered a very safe destination for travelers. The country has a low crime rate, and Moroccan people are globally renowned for their warmth and generous hospitality.
Our tours are designed to be enjoyed by everyone, but certain activities require a basic level of fitness. For example, we advise against camel trekking for pregnant women, individuals who have recently undergone surgery, those with severe back issues, or travelers over the age of 70. We can always arrange comfortable 4×4 transportation to the desert camps as a great alternative!
We recommend packing comfortable, sturdy walking shoes for exploring medinas and ancient ruins. Bring a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and your camera. If your tour includes a desert overnight stay, it is crucial to pack warm layers (like a fleece or jacket), as temperatures drop significantly in the Sahara at night.
Are your tours suitable for families and children? Yes! Morocco is a fantastic family destination. Our guided city tours, desert camps, and activities are highly family-friendly and can be adapted to suit the pace and interests of travelers of all ages.
Can you accommodate special dietary needs? Certainly. Moroccan cuisine is diverse and adaptable. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have specific food allergies, simply inform us at the time of booking, and we will ensure your dietary needs are fully met throughout your journey.
Can we add optional activities to our tour? Yes, adventure awaits! We can easily add optional excursions to your itinerary, such as ATV quad biking, sandboarding down the dunes, or buggy tours in the desert. Just let us know what you are interested in.
Can we do a day trip to the Sahara Desert? Because the true Sahara Desert (like Merzouga or Zagora) is located quite far from major cities—for example, it is over 600 kilometers from Casablanca and involves a long drive over the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech—it cannot be done in a single day. To truly experience the magic of the dunes, we highly recommend a multi-day tour of at least 3 to 4 days.
A brilliant but tiring 3 days The driver was extremely professional
The transition from the desert to the green mountains near Fes is amazing
Perfect itinerary to see the best of Morocco in a short time
We felt very safe and well taken care of during the whole 3 days
Great experience overall The desert camp was much nicer than expected
