PRIVATE DESERT TRIP — MARRAKECH TO FES | OFF THE BEATEN PATH

    OVERVIEW

Some tours take you to Morocco. This one takes you into it. The 5 Days Tour from Marrakech to Fes is one of the great Moroccan journeys — an unhurried adventure linking two magnificent imperial cities via the golden dunes of the Sahara. What sets it apart from similar routes is its commitment to going off the beaten path: lesser-known roads, hidden detours, and space for genuine encounters that you won’t find on the standard tourist circuit.

Along the way, you’ll visit the rarely seen Telouet Kasbah, meet a Berber family living in traditional cave dwellings in the mountains, spend a full day exploring the Merzouga desert (including a visit to a nomadic family), and drive through the lush Ziz Valley and cedar forests of the Middle Atlas before arriving in Fes. Every stop has been chosen with care, and every day leaves room to breathe.

All travel is by private air-conditioned 4×4, and all accommodation is hand-picked for quality and character.

    ITINERARY

DAY 1: MARRAKECH → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH → OUARZAZATE

Your driver picks you up from your accommodation in Marrakech early in the morning. Rather than the standard southern route, today you head into the High Atlas via Telouet — a less-travelled road that takes you through breathtaking mountain scenery to the remarkable Telouet Kasbah.

This little-visited palace was once home to the Glaoui chieftains who controlled the Atlas passes in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It’s a place of faded grandeur and extraordinary detail — ornate carved plaster, coloured zellige tiles, and rooms frozen in time. One of Morocco’s most atmospheric stops, and almost never crowded.

From Telouet, the road descends through a dramatic gorge to rejoin the main southern route at Ait Ben Haddou — the UNESCO-listed kasbah whose earthen towers have starred in productions the world over. After a visit, you continue to Ouarzazate for your first night.

    DAY 2: OUARZAZATE → SKOURA → KELAAT M’GOUNA → BOU THARAR → DADES VALLEY

Today takes you off the beaten path through the Rose Valley — the area around Kelaat M’Gouna, famous for its rose water production and beautiful springtime blooms. You’ll stop at the Skoura Oasis, a lush palmery full of crumbling kasbahs, before heading into the narrow Bou Tharar gorge — one of the most scenic and least-visited canyon routes in the south.

The day ends in the Dades Valley, where your hotel sits against a backdrop of towering rock formations. Dinner is home-style Moroccan cooking, and the valley is wonderfully quiet in the evening.

DAY 3: DADES VALLEY → TODRA GORGE → MERZOUGA DESERT

After breakfast, you head east to Tinghir, stopping to walk through the extraordinary Todra Gorge. The gorge’s towering walls, pressed tight above a cool mountain stream, create a dramatic corridor that is one of the most photogenic environments in all of North Africa.

From Tinghir, the landscape transitions into the open pre-Saharan plain. The drive east brings the first glimpse of the Erg Chebbi dunes — a golden wall of sand rising from the desert floor. Arriving at the edge of the dunes in the late afternoon, you mount your camel for a golden-hour ride deep into the sea of sand.

Your luxury desert camp provides dinner, Berber music around the fire, and a private tent with en-suite bathroom for the night.

    DAY 4: MERZOUGA DESERT EXPLORATION

A full day in the Sahara. After sunrise, you set out by 4×4 on an off-road excursion through the desert — venturing into remote corners that few tourists ever reach.

The centrepiece of the day is a visit to a nomadic family in their desert encampment. Welcomed with tea and warm hospitality, you’ll spend time learning about their traditions, their relationship with the land, and the rhythms of daily life in the Sahara. It’s an encounter that offers a profound and lasting perspective on a way of life that has endured for centuries.

The afternoon is open for sandboarding, a guided hike through the Monkey Fingers Canyon, and time to simply sit with the desert in its quietest hours. At sunset, another camel ride among the dunes, then an evening of storytelling and stargazing at the camp.

DAY 5: MERZOUGA DESERT → ZIZ VALLEY → IFRANE → FES

Breakfast at the camp, then the long but beautiful drive north to Fes. The route follows the Ziz Valley — a long, lush corridor of date palms, riverbanks, and ancient villages tracing the course of one of Morocco’s great rivers.

Climbing into the Middle Atlas Mountains, the landscape shifts dramatically from desert to forest. Near Azrou, wild Barbary macaques may appear in the cedar trees alongside the road. The mountain town of Ifrane, with its European-style red-roofed buildings and cool alpine atmosphere, offers a brief contrast before the road descends to Fes.

You arrive in the ancient medina city in the late afternoon, dropped at your hotel or riad.

    FAQ

How do I book a tour, and what are the payment terms?

To secure your reservation, we require a percentage deposit (payable via PayPal or Credit Card) at the time of booking. The remaining balance can be paid in cash (Euros, US Dollars, or Moroccan Dirhams) to your driver upon pick-up at the start of your tour. You may also choose to pay the full amount in advance via card or PayPal, though a standard transaction fee may apply.

    What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that travel plans can change. Generally, if you cancel well in advance (two months or more), you will receive a full refund. Cancellations made closer to the departure date may be subject to partial refunds or fees, while last-minute cancellations within a week of the tour are typically non-refundable. Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to adjust your dates.

Can I change or modify my private itinerary?

Absolutely. Our private tours are fully flexible. We want your trip to be perfect, so if you wish to adjust your itinerary, simply let us know. We kindly request that any significant changes be communicated at least two weeks before your tour begins so we can make the necessary arrangements with hotels and guides.

Is Morocco a safe destination for tourists?

Yes, Morocco is considered a very safe destination for travelers. The country has a low crime rate, and Moroccan people are globally renowned for their warmth and generous hospitality.

Are there physical restrictions for certain activities?

Our tours are designed to be enjoyed by everyone, but certain activities require a basic level of fitness. For example, we advise against camel trekking for pregnant women, individuals who have recently undergone surgery, those with severe back issues, or travelers over the age of 70. We can always arrange comfortable 4×4 transportation to the desert camps as a great alternative!

What essential items should I pack?

We recommend packing comfortable, sturdy walking shoes for exploring medinas and ancient ruins. Bring a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and your camera. If your tour includes a desert overnight stay, it is crucial to pack warm layers (like a fleece or jacket), as temperatures drop significantly in the Sahara at night.

    Tour Customizations & Logistics

Are your tours suitable for families and children? Yes! Morocco is a fantastic family destination. Our guided city tours, desert camps, and activities are highly family-friendly and can be adapted to suit the pace and interests of travelers of all ages.

Can you accommodate special dietary needs? Certainly. Moroccan cuisine is diverse and adaptable. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have specific food allergies, simply inform us at the time of booking, and we will ensure your dietary needs are fully met throughout your journey.

Can we add optional activities to our tour? Yes, adventure awaits! We can easily add optional excursions to your itinerary, such as ATV quad biking, sandboarding down the dunes, or buggy tours in the desert. Just let us know what you are interested in.

Can we do a day trip to the Sahara Desert? Because the true Sahara Desert (like Merzouga or Zagora) is located quite far from major cities—for example, it is over 600 kilometers from Casablanca and involves a long drive over the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech—it cannot be done in a single day. To truly experience the magic of the dunes, we highly recommend a multi-day tour of at least 3 to 4 days.
