PRIVATE TOUR — 4 DAYS MERZOUGA DESERT TOUR FROM ERRACHIDIA TO MARRAKECH

    OVERVIEW

The 4 day version adds a night in the Dades Valley, which makes a big difference. Instead of a single 9 hour drive from the Sahara to Marrakech, you break it into two manageable days: Day 3 takes you from Merzouga west via Rissani, Erfoud, and the Todra Gorge to the Dades Valley for an overnight; Day 4 continues through the Rose Valley, Skoura, Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou, and over the High Atlas to Marrakech.

The desert portion (Days 1 and 2) is identical to the 3 day version — full Merzouga exploration, nomads, Khamlia Gnaoua music, an old kohl mine, the flamingo lake, two nights at a luxury camp with camel rides at both sunsets. You just get the Todra and Dades gorges added on the way out.

Every itinerary is fully customisable to suit your preferences and pace.

    ITINERARY

DAY 1: ERRACHIDIA AIRPORT → MERZOUGA

Pick-up from Errachidia airport (ERH) or your accommodation. A scenic two-hour drive south to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. Overnight in Merzouga.

    Flight options into Errachidia:
    – Ryanair from Marrakech: 3 days a week, arriving between 7 am and 3 pm.
    – Royal Air Maroc from Casablanca: 7 days a week, arriving around midnight.

The itinerary can be adjusted to suit your arrival time.

    Approximate driving distance/time: 2 hours

DAY 2: MERZOUGA DESERT EXPLORATION — NOMADS, KHAMLIA, MERZOUGA LAKE, ERG CHEBBI, PALM GROVE

The whole day is spent exploring the Merzouga region. The area offers much more than dunes — fossil sites, small mines, a seasonal lake, oases, and nomad communities.

We start with an off-road drive to an old kohl (eyeliner) mine, then visit a Berber nomad family in their handwoven tent for tea. Next, Khamlia — a small village south of Merzouga where residents trace their roots back to Mali, Sudan, and Niger, famous for its Gnawa music tradition. You’ll hear a live performance. Free time for lunch locally.

In the afternoon, a walk through a palm grove and a drive to the seasonal lake (flamingos gather there when it’s full).

Later, camels again for another sunset crossing of the dunes and arrival at the luxury camp. Dinner and overnight at the camp — drumming around the fire, stars overhead.

    Approximate driving distance/time: 2 hours (off-road)

DAY 3: MERZOUGA → RISSANI → ERFOUD → TODRA GORGE → DADES VALLEY

After breakfast, we leave the desert and head west. First stop is Rissani — the former capital of Tafilalet, still a major trading town, with a lively souk on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. After a stroll, we continue to Erfoud for a fossil workshop visit.

The road then goes through the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad to reach the Todra Gorge, where the Todra river has carved a deep canyon with red cliffs on either side. Rock climbers come here — you’ll have time to walk under the cliffs. Free time for lunch at a restaurant in the area.

From Todra we continue to the Dades Valley via Boumalne Dades, with stops at the famous “monkey fingers” rock formations and at a viewpoint over the valley. Overnight at a hotel in the valley.

    Approximate driving distance/time: 5 hours

DAY 4: DADES VALLEY → ROSE VALLEY → SKOURA → OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU → HIGH ATLAS → MARRAKECH

Final day. The drive west starts at Kalaat M’Gouna — the centre of the Rose Valley, where roses are grown for perfume, rose water, and cosmetics (there’s a rose festival every May). We then continue through the palm groves of Skoura, a large oasis that was once a major stop on the caravan route between sub-Saharan Africa and the Mediterranean.

Next is Ouarzazate — the “gate of the desert” and home to Atlas Studios, one of the largest film studio complexes in the world. We visit the studios where many famous films have been shot.

From Ouarzazate, on to Ait Ben Haddou — the UNESCO-listed fortified village that’s appeared in Gladiator, Alexander, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones, among many others.

After Ait Ben Haddou, the road climbs over the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, with stops for photos and lunch. Drop-off at your accommodation or the airport in Marrakech ends the tour.

    Approximate driving distance/time: 5.5 hours

    FAQ

How do I book a tour, and what are the payment terms?

To secure your reservation, we require a percentage deposit (payable via PayPal or Credit Card) at the time of booking. The remaining balance can be paid in cash (Euros, US Dollars, or Moroccan Dirhams) to your driver upon pick-up at the start of your tour. You may also choose to pay the full amount in advance via card or PayPal, though a standard transaction fee may apply.

    What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that travel plans can change. Generally, if you cancel well in advance (two months or more), you will receive a full refund. Cancellations made closer to the departure date may be subject to partial refunds or fees, while last-minute cancellations within a week of the tour are typically non-refundable. Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to adjust your dates.

Can I change or modify my private itinerary?

Absolutely. Our private tours are fully flexible. We want your trip to be perfect, so if you wish to adjust your itinerary, simply let us know. We kindly request that any significant changes be communicated at least two weeks before your tour begins so we can make the necessary arrangements with hotels and guides.

Is Morocco a safe destination for tourists?

Yes, Morocco is considered a very safe destination for travelers. The country has a low crime rate, and Moroccan people are globally renowned for their warmth and generous hospitality.

Are there physical restrictions for certain activities?

Our tours are designed to be enjoyed by everyone, but certain activities require a basic level of fitness. For example, we advise against camel trekking for pregnant women, individuals who have recently undergone surgery, those with severe back issues, or travelers over the age of 70. We can always arrange comfortable 4×4 transportation to the desert camps as a great alternative!

What essential items should I pack?

We recommend packing comfortable, sturdy walking shoes for exploring medinas and ancient ruins. Bring a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and your camera. If your tour includes a desert overnight stay, it is crucial to pack warm layers (like a fleece or jacket), as temperatures drop significantly in the Sahara at night.

    Tour Customizations & Logistics

Are your tours suitable for families and children? Yes! Morocco is a fantastic family destination. Our guided city tours, desert camps, and activities are highly family-friendly and can be adapted to suit the pace and interests of travelers of all ages.

Can you accommodate special dietary needs? Certainly. Moroccan cuisine is diverse and adaptable. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have specific food allergies, simply inform us at the time of booking, and we will ensure your dietary needs are fully met throughout your journey.

Can we add optional activities to our tour? Yes, adventure awaits! We can easily add optional excursions to your itinerary, such as ATV quad biking, sandboarding down the dunes, or buggy tours in the desert. Just let us know what you are interested in.

Can we do a day trip to the Sahara Desert? Because the true Sahara Desert (like Merzouga or Zagora) is located quite far from major cities—for example, it is over 600 kilometers from Casablanca and involves a long drive over the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech—it cannot be done in a single day. To truly experience the magic of the dunes, we highly recommend a multi-day tour of at least 3 to 4 days.
